Time duration allotted to each presentation should be adhered to very strictly. You might be interrupted in between if you exceed time limit and asked to discontinue. Marks will be deducted for exceeding allotted time.

The participants for the contests should register for the conference in advance. The entries shall not be considered unless they have registered for the conference.

The entries should reach the organizers latest by 26th August 2008. The selected candidates would be informed by September 1st, 2008 via email. The organizing scientific committee’s decision will be final and no queries regarding the selection process shall be entertained.

The entries should be submitted electronically with the Subject title of the Competition example “JCC Entry” for Journal Club Competition. Incomplete entries will be rejected. The entries should be submitted to emarcs2008@yahoo.com latest by 26th August 2008.

COMPETITIONS FOR FACULTY, PHYSICIANS, RESIDENTS & STUDENTS

CLINICO-PATHOLOGICAL CASE COMPETITION (CPC) :

30 Minutes each: Presenter 20 minutes + 10 Minutes Discussion

Prize: INR 8,000 (Eight Thousand Rupees)

Rules and guidelines:

  • After Registering for INDUS-EM 2008 the Competitor will email emarcs2008@yahoo.com and express intent to compete in CPC.
  • The scientific committee will provide the CPC cases and the cases will be sent to the participants on e-mail.
  • Participants are required to present the case, defend each differential and then give their most Fitting diagnosis.

They will be given 20 minutes to make their presentation. Then judge will reveal the diagnoses for rest of the 8-10 Minutes.

Cases will be emailed to the participants after 1st September, 2008

The CPC Competition involves a competitor and faculty discussant from different institutions. Because the purpose of the CPC is for the competitor to solve the unknown case, no communication between the competitor and faculty occurs before the CPC Competition.

Case Presentation: The competitor describes the case as it presented and was initially evaluated. This should include a brief history of the present illness, significant past medical history, physical examination, and laboratory studies (proper units of measure are required).

Discussion: The competitor discusses the differential diagnosis, decision-making, etc., and advances a tentative diagnosis. This section should be formatted to include a summary of the pertinent historical and physical examination points, an explanation of the important aspects of the case that contribute to a information about each of these pathologies, a description of the thought process occurring to narrow the differential and a tentative diagnosis based on the above.

Case Outcome: The competitor describes subsequent data and events. This should include a brief summary of any additional management, which occurred, the working diagnosis made after hospital admission, and the patient's clinical course.

Competitor Discussion: This summarizes the important laboratory, physical examination findings, and subsequent hospital course that contribute the final diagnosis. The competitor should briefly summarize the important criteria used to establish the diagnosis, and provide evidence why this diagnosis is consistent with the patient's presentation. This section should also explain all issues raised in the case presentation section such as abnormal laboratory findings or abnormal physical findings.

Final Diagnosis: The Faculty reveals the Final Diagnosis and explains the reason for the same.

FREE POSTER COMPETITION (FPC):

Display will begin on 10th October at 1200 hrs at Lunch. Competitors will have to be present alongside their poster everyday on 10th, 11th & 12th October 2008. Final judging will be done on 1300 hrs on 12th October 2008. Posters can be displayed without the presenter during remaining hours of the Summit.

After Registering for INDUS-EM 2008 the Competitor will email emarcs2008@yahoo.com and submit the Poster Entry. The Research Committee will inform via email the result of the selection of the Poster. The Competitor then will follow the format below.

Venue: AJ Institute of Medical Sciences Exhibition Hall
Prize: INR 4,000 (Four Thousand Rupees)

Rules and guidelines:

  • The contestants should register for the conference prior to submission. The scientific posters should be based on original research work of material that has not been presented before in a different forum.
  • Please submit Poster Content in WORD Document for Research Committee Review.
  • Competitors will be informed about the Selection of their poster via Email.
  • All participants in the poster session will have their posters prominently displayed in the exhibit space during the conference.
  • All posters should be in PORTRAIT layout.
  • The information flow should be uniform, i.e. either from top to bottom or from left to right, but not both.

Unique Case Reports, X-Rays, EKG’s, Photographs, MRI, Angiograms, Sonograms and CT Scans will be considered submissions for the poster competition. Dimension of posters should not exceed 120 cm in height and 95 cm in length. Primary submission for selection should be in abstract format. Pictures should be attached wherever necessary.

Example for a Original Investigation Poster:

  • Introduction: A few brief sentences that states the purpose of study.
  • Methods: Methodology employed to conduct study.
  • Results: State outcome of study as illustrations, tables, figures, graphs, photos, flow charts, etc.
  • Conclusion: Briefly discuss the data and the significance of the results outlining a summary/list of recommendations.

Title, Authors and Institutional Affiliation

  • Font size of all letters should be at least not less than 2.5 cm high.
  • The heading should NOT include author's names and affiliations.

Table, Charts, Illustrations, etc. as required

  • Letters for text in the body of the poster should be legible for comfortable reading at a distance of 2 m away.
  • Font size should not be less than 1 cm high.
  • Font type should be in a sans-serif face (e.g. Arial) that is clear and concise. Do not use all capital letters.
  • Be consistent with headings, whether they are all capital letters, bold face or italic faces.
  • To help viewers follow the flow of ideas, number or letter each illustration and cue it into your text. Each chart or table should have a label or explanation.

INDUS EM Secretariat will not be held responsible for any loss or damage to a poster presented during the conference.

RESEARCH PAPER COMPETITION (RPC):

After Registering for INDUS-EM 2008 the Competitor will email emarcs2008@yahoo.com and submit the Research Entry. The Research Committee will inform via email the result of the selection of the paper. The Competitor then will follow the format below.

Rules and guidelines:

  • Each presenter will have 20 minutes for presentation. 15 minutes will be given for presentation followed by five minutes for discussion.
  • PowerPoint 2000 or later is the only acceptable presenting format.
  • Limit the length of the talk to 15 minutes. 15 Minutes plus 5 minutes for discussion.
  • You may keep 1 or 2 slides after the last slide of your formal presentation that can be added to address questions or if there is extra time in the session.
  • For a more effective presentation please use a good mix of pictures, graphs and text.
  • Keep the file size to less than 3 MB whenever possible. If you bring a movie to be shown during your presentation, you must bring the actual movie file with you as well as the PowerPoint presentation.
  • Bring your talk on two forms of removable media, such as a thumb drive and a CD-ROM. Do not bring 3.5" floppy disks, Zip disks or tape drives.

Journal Club Competition (JCC)

Competitors will be notified of the exact Day they will participate in this competition.

Rules and guidelines:

  • After Registering for INDUS-EM 2008 the Competitor will email emarcs2008@yahoo.com and express intent to compete in CPC.
  • Participants will be emailed with articles for presentation by the organizers after registration for the conference and emailing their intent to compete at emarcs2008@yahoo.com
  • Participants should be able to present the article, the strengths, the weaknesses, clinical relevance and future research opportunities. They will be required to discuss the results and talk about the basic theory behind the article. They will be asked questions about the article and the theory behind the article.
  • The organizers will Email the articles for presentation to the participants by September 1st, 2008
  • 15 Minutes will be given for each presentation followed by discussion over 5 minutes

SPECIAL COMPETITION FOR NURSES AND PARAMEDICS

CASE MANAGEMENT COMPETITION (CMC):

Date: 9th October 2008
Time: 1500-1700 Hrs
Venue: Father Muller Medical College, Mangalore
Prize: INR 7,000 (Seven Thousand Rupees)

Rules and guidelines:

  • Registration is compulsory for participating. Email emarcs2008@yahoo.com after registering and express your intent to compete.
  • The Cases will be emailed by 1st September 2008.
  • The participants should be able to lay the case out, and draw a management plan. They should be also able to highlight nursing issues with the case and there opinions. Nurses have to present the scenario and outline the Steps in nursing management. Also they should be able to answer questions about what they would do next or when will they call a doctor. What are the tests automatically they will think off about the scenario.
  • 10 minutes will be provided for each presentation followed by discussion for 5 minutes.
