Workshops at INDUS-EM Summit 2008 at Mangalore
- The Following Skill Building Workshops will be offered at INDUS-EM 2008 as a package called as Workshop Bundle. (Two Workshops Together)
- Participants can choose one Bundle only.
- The workshop Timings Do not coincide with competition or CME timings hence Competitors and delegates can register for workshops.
- If any of the workshops are cancelled the registrant will always have a choice to choose from any of workshop bundles available.
- Participants have to register for the Summit in order to attend the workshops

Emergency Airway and Ventilation (6 Hours)
Director: Dr US Raveendra (KSHEMA, Mangalore)
- This is a Six Hour Workshop offered by the KSHEMA Airway Laboratory in collaboration with the Airway India Research (AIR) Group.
- This Training Program will cover Key aspects of achieving a Emergency Airway and Accomplishing successful and stable ventilation in Controlled as well as Challenging Scenarios in Emergency and Trauma Medicine.
- Focus will be equally distributed to cover key practical aspects in all age groups from Pediatric to geriatrics.
Sonosite Emergency and Trauma Sonography (6 Hours)
Director: Dr Bradley Peckler
- This is Six Hour Training Program focusing on learning key features in using the Emergency Sonogram Technology in the Emergency Department and a Busy Trauma Center.
- Sonography is used in Emergency Care to diagnose Gall Bladder Cardiac, Pulmonary, Abdominal Emergencies, Aortic and Vascular Pathology.
- This workshop will cover key features to techniques for using the right Probes on the right patients to diagnose the right conditions.
- A considerable amount of time will be spent on hands on training.
- At the end of the course the Participants will have confidence to use the sonogram in the Emergency Department.
Wound Care, Splinting & Resucitation Rhythms (6 Hours)

Wound Care
- A practical session on cleaning and suturing a laceration Participants will have the opportunity to practice basic suturing, stapling, taping, and tissue gluing techniques. This workshop will provide lecture, demonstration and hands-on practice for the care of wounds in the acute care setting.
- Participant will learn:
- to properly assess and manage a wide range of wounds
- the use of skin adhesives, taping and staples
- the best suture material
- hand ties and instrument ties
- basic infection information
- wound management and healing to include skin cleaning preparation.
- Various suture techniques
This is a hands-on activity-filled session.
Resuscitation Rhythms
This unique Resuscitation Rhythms course focuses on reading an cardiac Life threatening ECG and treating the rhythm and the patient both in a controlled and challenging situation. It also helps the participant recognize various rhythms. As providers of acute care it is important that the participants have adequate skills in reading an ECG Rhythm and be aware of the current treatment for the same.

Splinting
This Academic piece is aimed to instill a core understanding of the emergency stabilization of fractures, dislocations, and soft tissue injuries.
Upon completion of this course participants will:
- Understand the significance and context of emergency stabilization and splinting.
- Be able to demonstrate the essential components of a brief orthopedic assessment exam.
- Be prepared to apply an emergency splint to any portion of the body and monitor the splinted area thereafter.
During this workshop participants will briefly review the signs, symptoms, and pathophysiology of orthopedic injuries. They will study the relationship of the latter to the splinting process and the context in which orthopedic injures occur. They will learn a brief basic orthopedic exam, master simple techniques for reducing injury deformity in preparation for splinting, and understand when it is appropriate to apply these techniques. Participants will spend the major portion of this workshop practicing “hands on” splinting skills.
Pregnancy and Pediatric Resuscitation (6 Hours)
Director: Dr Ambareesh (Manipal University, Karnataka)
- The Training Program on Pediatric and Pregnancy Resuscitation is a uniquely designed course by the Resuscitation Team at Mangalore Medical Colleges.
- The curriculum will focus on learning important scientific fundamentals on managing and resuscitating pregnant and pediatric patients with fluids, drugs and transfusions.
- Key aspects of differing resuscitation maneuvers and techniques will be an important area of focus in the workshop.
- This is the first time that such a Training Module has been designed with the confidence that on completion of the course the trainee will have complete knowledge and skill to manage both pregnant and pediatric patient who are victims of trauma or shock.
